About

The Museum of Industrialization documents — honestly and without nostalgia — the forced industrialization and uprooting of the communist period, seen from Satu Mare, a city in north-western Romania, close to the border. After the regime took hold, the planned economy remade the city from the top down: new factories, rapid proletarianization, apartment blocks raised on the sites of demolished houses, commuting, scarcity and the fear of the frontier. The objects, documents and reconstructions do not celebrate the "achievements" — they show the other side of the coin: what the transformation meant for the people who lived through it.
